VWGS Directors 2015-2016
Meike joined the VWGS Board in 2013. She is a Lecturer in the Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia with a background as language instructor of German and French, and more recently as teacher educator in the Faculty of Education at UBC. During her time on the board, Meike has chaired a subcommittee to develop a strategic plan for the VWGS which sets out principal objectives and a general vision for the German school community.
Steve joined the Board of Directors in 2016 and also serves as the Society's Vice-President. He is a lawyer and partner at Singleton Urquhart LLP where he practices primarily in the areas of insurance defence, professional liability and commercial litigation. Born to German parents in Canada, Steve attended the Frankfurt International School for several years and also studied for a year in Düsseldorf. His son Henry now attends the VWGS.
Hart joined the Board of Directors in 2006 and served for many years as the Society's President. He led the School through an extended period of significant change, including the recruitment of two new Principals and improvements to academic and community programs. He has also provided leadership to the Board in enhancing governance standards. Hart is a former Partner at KPMG Management Consulting and works as a Senior Business Executive for a BC Crown corporation. He holds a masters and Ph.D. degree in business administration, and he has earned the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
Werner joined the board in 2013 and has advised on a number of issues related to finances and budgeting. He participated on a VWGS subcommittee to develop a strategic plan for the school. Professionally, Werner is an Associate Professor at UBC's Sauder School of Business, where he teaches international business management and environmental management. He also has a background in Information Technology, and since 2005 he has been the treasurer of the strata corporation for the townhouse complex where he and his family lives at UBC.
Maria Dos Santos
Maria Dos Santos joined the Board in 2015 and is part of the event management committee. She has been involved in after-school activities with the VWGS since 2014. She holds a Ph.D. degree in Soil Sciences from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Vienna as well as master degrees in Environmental Management and Geochemistry. She also has a background in Education from her previous studies in Venezuela. She works in Environmental Management, Soil Remediation and Waste Management. In addition to being on the VWGS board, she supports the Vienna Montevideo Platform working on the academic interchange between students and professionals from Uruguay (her motherland) and Austria.
Patricia Tait joined the Vancouver Westside German School Board in 2015 as part of the Event Management / Marketing Committee. She is also serving as classroom parent at the VWGS. At the University of Leipzig, Patricia studied Linguistics, French and German as a Foreign Language and she also holds a BA in Tourism & Travel Management from a Hotel Management School in Leipzig, Germany. This led her to Vancouver and four years in the tourism and hospitality industry while she worked at Vancouver's top-rated hotels. In 2008, Patricia transitioned into the association management industry. From her role as Account Manager at a Vancouver based association management company, she has a thorough understanding of the non-for-profit, convention and recreation cycle. Her professional experience include event & conference planning, fundraising, marketing and communications.
Lidija Bakovic comes to the Vancouver Westside German School with an impressive mix of relevant academic, practical teaching and school administration experience, gained in both Canada and Germany. She holds a master's degree in German as Foreign Language from the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and a master's degree in German Literature from the University of Dalhousie, Nova Scotia, supplemented by further studies in related fields at the University of Munich, Germany, and the University Montreal, Quebec.
Kirsten Friedrichs was hired by the Vancouver Westside German School in Summer 2014. Responsible for the administration she is supporting the principal, board members and staff in varies functions. After enjoying Berlin for more than 25 years Kirsten moved to Vancouver in 2013 together with her husband. They founded the company ADEPT24 Business Solutions as a consulting company that supports foreign businesses entering the Canadian and US market with traditional high quality products.
